Position Summary

Core Responsibilities
You will provide direct patient care to individuals recovering from medical and surgical procedures on a busy medical/surgical unit. Your responsibilities include assessing patient conditions, administering medications and treatments, monitoring vital signs, and documenting comprehensive nursing notes. You will collaborate with physicians, surgeons, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams to develop and implement individualized patient care plans. Patient education regarding post-operative care, medication management, and discharge instructions will be integral to your role.
You will respond promptly to patient requests and concerns, maintaining a compassionate approach while managing multiple patients simultaneously. Your responsibilities extend to infection control protocols, equipment operation, and adherence to all facility policies and safety standards. Additionally, you will participate in ongoing unit initiatives, quality improvement projects, and maintain current knowledge of best practices in medical-surgical nursing. Communication with family members and coordination with social services and case management will support seamless patient transitions and optimal outcomes.
Must-Have Requirements
Candidates must hold a current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license in Iowa or possess an interstate compact license. You must have a minimum of two years of recent experience in medical-surgical nursing settings. Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association is mandatory.
You must be willing to relocate to Des Moines and reside at least 60 miles from the facility location. Strong clinical assessment skills, excellent communication abilities, and the capacity to work independently while collaborating effectively with healthcare teams are essential. You should demonstrate flexibility, adaptability, and professionalism in fast-paced healthcare environments. Experience with electronic health record (EHR) systems is preferred but not required.
The ability to work a 4-day schedule with 10-hour shifts (07:00-19:30, Monday through Friday, totaling 36 hours weekly) is mandatory. Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license are necessary. Current immunizations including COVID-19 vaccination and annual influenza vaccination are required. You must be comfortable with the physical demands of nursing, including standing for extended periods, lifting patients, and performing repetitive tasks.
