Core Responsibilities
As a Cath Lab Technician, you will play a vital role in supporting complex cardiac catheterization procedures. Your primary responsibilities include preparing the catheterization laboratory for procedures by ensuring all equipment, instruments, and supplies are properly sterilized, organized, and readily accessible. You will assist interventional cardiologists and nursing staff during diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures, maintaining strict adherence to sterile technique protocols throughout all patient interactions.
You will monitor and operate specialized cardiac imaging equipment, including fluoroscopy systems and hemodynamic monitoring devices, while ensuring optimal image quality for clinical decision-making. Documentation of procedure details, medications administered, and patient observations will be completed accurately and timely in accordance with hospital standards and regulatory requirements.
Patient care responsibilities include positioning patients appropriately, maintaining patient comfort and safety during procedures, and providing compassionate support to anxious or apprehensive patients. You will respond promptly to emergency situations, assisting with emergency procedures and life-saving interventions when necessary. Additionally, you will maintain inventory of specialized cardiac supplies and equipment, communicating needs to ensure adequate stock levels.
Communication with the multidisciplinary healthcare team is essential. You will collaborate effectively with physicians, nurses, and other technicians to ensure smooth procedure execution and optimal patient outcomes. Maintaining detailed records and following established protocols for infection control and safety are non-negotiable aspects of this position.
Must-Have Requirements
Candidates must possess current certification as a Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) or equivalent cardiac catheterization certification recognized by the state of Iowa. A minimum of two years of professional experience working in a cardiac catheterization laboratory setting is required. BLS (Basic Life Support) certification must be current and maintained throughout employment.
Strong knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and common interventional procedures is essential. You must demonstrate proficiency with cardiac imaging equipment and hemodynamic monitoring systems. Excellent manual dexterity and the ability to work under pressure in demanding clinical situations are critical. Outstanding attention to detail, exceptional organizational skills, and the ability to maintain strict sterile technique are required.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are necessary for collaborating with physicians and nursing staff. Physical stamina to stand for extended periods and lift moderate weights is important. Flexibility to work morning shifts (7:00 AM – 5:30 PM), Monday through Friday, on a four-day, ten-hour-per-week schedule is required. Willingness to relocate to Des Moines as a non-local candidate is mandatory for consideration.
